Our human nature drives us to be comfortable instead of better. In our comfort we would rather have an excuse to do nothing than to master our nature and accomplish what is possible in our lives.
In the 1960's the mantra, "If it feels good do it.", was popularized. This came with the unspoken baggage, "If it doesn't feel good, don't do it." Since then we have too often chased our pleasures and tried to take the path of least resistance.
We celebrate those who can manipulate or cheat the system for personal gain in our schools, at work, in our entertainment and in our government.
Today you can't read, watch or listen to the news without some scandal coming from a place of leadership that sets our standards. These scandals have and continue to lower our standards.
The greatest damage is coming from the everyday acceptance that doing as little as we can to just get by and be comfortable is acceptable. Our expectations of a better life increase as our willingness to become better people diminish. This formula just doesn't work.
People's work ethic is deteriorating, our standards falling and respect for authority disappearing.
At Building You we ask the question, "What dominates your thoughts?" The answer isn't the person I should be, it's what I want to have or accomplish. It's usually what we think will make us comfortable or happy. Its things outside us and our control.
We have become victims of our human nature instead of its master and are suffering for our lack of self mastery.
Making excuses instead of taking responsibility is part of our nature but we now make excuses for behavior that we should call unacceptable.
Stress has become a medical term. Common courtesy has become uncommon. In the 60's stress was defined as a structural weakness. At Building You we believe it still is and can teach you how to eliminate it from your life. If you see or feel any of this happening please contact us.
